What do I do ? Well, after 20+ years as an Advertising Agency Media Director I found that whilst my expertise lay in pursuing media value my experience meant my opinion on broader advertising matters was being sought more & more. “Confidentially, of course…….” was an overture that was becoming very familiar.
So, I now devote myself to consulting full time. About advertising generally, Media specifically with Television a particular focus.
Some of the larger consultations require an onsite presence to which I am happy to commit. Notable examples include stints at Carat, Arena, Arena Azure, Zenith, Havas Media and most recently, Smithfield Agency. That has mainly been where there was a need to establish or organise implementation of media deployments.
Sensibly there is a current clamour for on-line expertise. Those who have it have little or no expertise of TV. I find that I am particularly well placed to compliment them with my TV knowledge. This all dovetails with my analytical work. While keeping one foot in the hurly burly of the market place I particularly relish providing appraisals, reviews, studies and reports to aid investment decisions. Complicated decisions dispassionately broken down into bite sized pros and cons with a recommendation of what to do next have become a forte.
I have produced market based recommendations for a number of emergent TV stations detailing real world scenario of likely ad revenue and how/who best to deliver their offering to market. A particular challenge was for a consortium who were looking at launching a TV-am me2 in India!
On a number of occasions, I have sat with the “legals” of start-ups or their investors as an industry expert explaining industry protocols and practices to assist due diligence. It’s not just on TV projects where my help is sought. I prepared a study for a company of Web Designers intent on developing an advertising dependent app. It included take up rates and their implications for ad revenue flow. I have also been active in OOH helping to identify market gaps and opportunities for the siting of new plant.
An International Property Developer was selling the UK franchise for Villa Sales on Sicily. I prepared a study on the market potential and likely costs involved in filling the quota as an insight into operational costs for those involved in the bid process.
I regularly provide independent & venture specific appraisals of the potential audience and the likely cost of reaching them for film industry investors. Helping some get made and avoiding the odd turkey. I also regularly provide market based valuations to Sports Sponsors of their actual discernible exposure from Televised events.
I also very, very discreetly advise the odd client on their agency’s proposal/recommendations providing key questions to keep their people on their toes.
